What My Study Sets is
My Study Sets is a free, independently built flashcard and practice-test app. It is not a commercial product: there is no advertising, no selling of data, and nothing is ever for sale. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and what happens to it.
What we collect
- Account info. The email address and display name you sign up with, handled by Firebase Authentication (a Google service). We don't collect your real name unless you choose to use it as your display name. If you choose "Continue with Google," Google sends us the name and email address of the Google account you pick (and its profile picture, which we don't save or show). We never see your Google password, and we don't get access to anything else in your Google account.
- Your study content. The sets, terms, and definitions you create or import, and any quizzes you make (each question, its answer choices, which choice is correct, and an optional label such as a reference number). This is yours; we store it so the app can show it back to you, and so you can optionally share a set, quiz, or folder with someone else using a share code you generate. Anyone you give that code to gets their own copy of the content (never your quiz results or study history), and turning off sharing stops the code from working. You can also add a free-text note to a set or quiz; it is stored with that set and included whenever it is shared. You can add one picture to a card or quiz question. The picture is shrunk on your device before it is saved, is stored with your content, is deleted when you remove the card or set, and is copied to anyone you share the set with. Pictures are not scanned or reviewed automatically, so only add pictures you have the right to use.
- Sets added for you. Some accounts have a set, quiz, or folder added to their library by the people who run the app. Each account gets its own copy, and a small record that it was delivered (your account ID and which item) is kept. The copy doesn't say who added it. It can't be deleted or changed until it's released, and after that it stays in your library as your own. It can also be taken back, which removes your copy and its delivery record.
- Your quiz results. Each time you finish a quiz round, we save your score, the date, whether it was a timed exam or a retry, and which questions you missed. This powers the "Recent attempts" and "Most missed" lists on that quiz, which only you can see. We also save your Fast Learn progress (how many times in a row you've answered each question right) so you can leave and pick up where you left off. Your results and progress are deleted along with the quiz (see "How long we keep it"), and they're never included when you share it.
- Basic usage data. When you study a set or quiz, we record which one, which mode (flashcards, oral practice, quiz, etc.), and how many terms or questions you went through, no more detail than that. We also record when you last opened the app, for the same purpose. This is used only for the app's own usage dashboard (visible only to the app's developer), to understand overall usage and improve the app. This first-party usage data is never sold or shared with advertisers, and it is not sent to Google Analytics (see "Site analytics" below).
- Site analytics. The app uses Google Analytics, turned on by default, to count which pages get used. It records the page you visit (never anything after a "?" in the address, which is where game and share codes live) plus what Google derives from your browser: device and browser type, language, and approximate location (worked out from your IP address, which Google doesn't store in Analytics). It is not linked to your account, and it never includes your study content, email address, or name. We turn off Google's advertising features (Google Signals and ad personalization) and don't use any of this for advertising. You'll see a short notice the first time you visit, and you can opt out at any time in Settings under Privacy. Opting out stops collection and deletes the analytics cookies on that device.
- Friends leaderboard. To show the weekly leaderboard on the Friends page, we keep a small profile for your account: the nickname you choose, how many terms and quiz questions you've studied this week, and your current study streak. Another signed-in user can read it only if they already have your account's internal ID, which in practice means friends whose leaderboard you're on. It can't be browsed or searched, and it contains nothing else about you or your study content.
- Live group games. If you host or join a live game session, the nickname you enter and your score for that session are stored for the length of the game so other participants can see the shared leaderboard. This isn't tied to your real identity unless you choose a nickname that is.
Apart from the optional site analytics above, we only collect what the app actually needs to work. We don't ask for anything else.
Who else sees it
We don't sell or share your data with advertisers. A small number of service providers process data on our behalf, only to make specific features work:
- Firebase (Google). Hosts the app, handles sign-in, and stores your data in its database.
- Cloudflare Workers AI. Only when you tap "Explain this term," the term and definition you're asking about are sent to generate an explanation. Nothing else about your account is sent.
- Google Analytics (Google). Receives the page-view data described under "Site analytics" above, unless you opt out.
- Resend. Sends the app's email: the study reminders described below, an anonymous copy of feedback you submit (to the developer), and a notice to the developer when a new account is created. To send you a reminder, Resend receives your email address, first name, and the reminder's text. No advertising or promotional email is ever sent.
- Cloudflare (servers). Also runs the daily reminder check and the unsubscribe page, which read the account details the reminders need (see "Study reminder emails" below).
Study reminder emails
If you haven't opened My Study Sets in 7 days, we email you a short reminder, then at most one a week while you're away, and never more than 4 in a row. Opening the app resets this. To decide who gets one, the app uses when you last opened it, and to write the email it uses your first name and, if you set one, your countdown's label and date. We keep a record of how many reminders you've been sent and when, so we don't send too many. Every reminder has an unsubscribe link, and you can turn reminders off or back on any time in Settings under Email.
Anonymous feedback
The "Send feedback" option in Settings is anonymous by design. Being signed in is only checked to prevent spam, and your identity is never attached to the message, stored, or logged. We can't reply to a feedback message or connect it back to your account.
Cookies and local storage
We use your browser's local storage for a few things: your sign-in session, your light/dark theme choice, and a couple of study preferences. Unless you opt out, Google Analytics also sets two first-party cookies to tell visits apart. None of it is used for advertising or cross-site tracking. See our Cookie Policy for the full list.
How long we keep it
Your content stays until you remove it. A set or quiz you delete moves to "Recently deleted" and is kept for 30 days so you can restore it, then it is permanently removed along with its cards, pictures, and quiz results.
Deleting your account. You can delete your account yourself at any time: open Settings, choose "Delete account," and confirm with your password (or Google). That permanently deletes your sign-in and everything stored with it: your sets and quizzes (including Recently deleted), quiz results and study progress, streak and leaderboard profile, friend connections, jam entries, any games or jams you host, and the share links you made. It takes effect right away and can't be undone. Two small things can remain for a while: a nickname you used in another person's live game may stay in that game's record until it is cleared, and copies of emails we already sent (such as study reminders) stay with our email provider for its normal retention period.
An account that hasn't signed in for a long stretch is also automatically deleted, along with its data; see the notice on the sign-up page for the current cutoff date.
Children's privacy
My Study Sets is intended for users age 13 and up. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone younger than that.
Security
Your data is protected by Firebase's authentication and database security rules, which restrict access to your own account's data. No online service can guarantee perfect security, but we don't collect more than we need specifically to keep that exposure small.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
